The Digital Fad

I talked with two women this week about film. One, I was buying a roll of
slide film at a drug store and the woman said she had a digital but the card
was now full and she didn't know how to print them out with the printer her
kids bought her. The other was cutting my hair and said she didn't like the
lag time (I told her to try turning off the display) but said she still had
to fiddle around printing them out and felt it took as much time as dropping
them off at the developers. I'm wondering that unless they put WI-FI in all
digital cameras which will allow people to walk past their printer and print
their photos, if this digital thing will start to fade away? A lot of
people that tell you how they can just print out their photos are not really
doing it. They are saving them for when they have the time. I'm not saying
this is true in all cases. So those that write back saying their 90 year
grandmother prints them out are not really making a point about all the
"soccer moms" that don't have the time for printing out and sorting out 1000
photos. This is a problem that the camera manufacturers will need to look
into if the digital fad is going to fly with the 20-55 female that has
better things to do. What say you?

Re: The Digital Fad

Digital is definitely not a fad, but I'd have to say I agree about the
issues with casual/easy printing.
There are many people who simply want a nice stack of 3x6 prints without
having to fiddle. Digital definitely means more fiddling. -Whether it be
laoding your card at a kiosk...and selecting the images you want/don't want,
or cropping, or etc.... Or simply trying to print out your their own at
home, and either not having good software for it...or simply being confused
by the process and the consepts one needs to understand to achieve passable
results.
There is something to be said for ONLY having to know how to load a roll of
film and turning it into the processor...compared with all of the do's,
don'ts and basic understanding that must be covered in order to get that
same little stack of 4x6 prints grandma was always happy with.
THIS...is indeed an issue for digital, and a common conplaint I hear from my
family. The fact is...even I do not print nearly as often as I did when I
was shooting only film. Why? -Because I have the benefit of viewing my
images on-screen without needed prints of EVERYTHING. -But my family does
live at my house, and they want stack of prints. :)
Printing at home is NOT cheaper, and in many cases it's not faster.
I can't, for example, shop for an hour while I wait for my prints to be
handed to me. -Instead, I'm sitting at my computer...and putting real
effort into making decent prints...the same effort that someone ELSE could
have put forth if it was film.
No...Digital is no fad. It is here to stay.
BUT...I think people have to admit that for the casual user who wants a lot
of prints, film wasn't so bad...after all.

Re: The Digital Fad

Agreed!!
Besides, if they (the 20-55 female that has better things to do) want to
treat digital exactly like film they can. So they have over a card instead
of a film.... woopdoop! ...I think even the blonde ones could handle that!
....but then again??? ;-)

Re: The Digital Fad

I think that someone who believes digital is a fad is a long long way
from reality.
