Lens element swap in Takumar lenses

I posted yesterday about a loose auto aperture pin on my SMC 50mm 1.4 lens,
but i have another question. i do also have a super-tak 50mm 1.4 from the
same era. same metal barrel and look. can i just swap out the elements and
lens id so that the SMC glass goes in the ST body? are the elements the same
size?
that would be an easy fix.

It *may* or *may not* work.
Lens formulations are/were often changed with little or no outside
evidence.
If the lenses *really* are the same (serial numbers close to each other
may be a hint) then the operation has a good chance of success.
You can always test the lens before & after the operation - that would
give you an idea whether the swap was successful.
P.S.
Rereading your post: Do you mean the moving *entire* optical unit into
another lens body?
If so - if it fits & the infinity focus is accurate (though also check
the focus at minimum distance) - it should be o.k.
