Strange optical effect

Can someone, please, explain how this strange effect was achieved: I
saw it in the videoclip
"Air Rings" (at rent-a-cloud.com). It is a large illuminated ring which
changes shape as the sun moves down. It doesn't look like done via
filter, and I can't think of any 16mm lens that could do it. I know
those pretty well. Perhaps it was a 35mm one??? I emailed their site,
but their cameraman is not available at present.
Grateful for answer.

Re: strange optical effect

The lenses might not have been multi-coated (no coating?) or the
aperture blades might have been reflecting the light. I've seen this
effect in movies made in the 1970's when they were using their zoom on
the sun. My hi-8 video camera does weird effects when I use 1/10,000
second, though I don't think that's the case here.
