Another post made me think of this question... Would an "L" zoom, or it's other brand equivalent, be good enough to make prime lenses obsolete? Just curious what other's opinions would be.

Now that is *really* funny. ;-)

You are by no means the first person to suggest that! ;-)

But most people don't use the best zooms - they use junk lenses that work tolerably well at f/8 or f/11 but are extremely poor at anything wider. That's where the high quality zooms really score - they tend to offer wider maximum apertures and perform well at those wider apertures. The Canon L zooms are very good performers, as are the pro Nikon equivalents.

Hmm, noting the smiley I deleted unless it was absolutely chronic at other focal lengths a better solution would be to add detents on the zoom ring at the three best focal lengths and give the choice back to the photographer. Pete -- http://www.petezilla.co.uk

Gotta admit, it was pretty clever. Made me chuckle.

From what I've gathered so far, if taken to the extremes, primes are still better. But, for the vast majority of what people will do, the best zooms are just as good. :-p

Re: Is L glass that good?
On the contrary, it is a zoom, but one that can only be used at the three discrete focal lengths. Its construction is that of a zoom lens, but the optics are only corrected for those three focal lengths. So in the interests of maintaining optical excellence, they are the only three focal lengths you are allowed to use. ;-)

Where a prime lens is useful is in low light where you really need to open up the aperture. F/2.8 is fast for a zoom lens whereas f/1.8 is like falling off a log for a prime. And that is more then enough difference to be shooting at 1/60 sec instead of 1/30. Scott
