Is L glass that good?

Another post made me think of this question...
Would an "L" zoom, or it's other brand equivalent, be good enough to
make prime lenses obsolete?
Just curious what other's opinions would be.

Re: Is L glass that good?

I'm sure they could design a zoom lens for the M - in fact, as I said,
they already have. <g>
But the real problem isn't the lens, it's the *viewfinder*.
(think about it!)
When Leica standards drop to those of Canon's L glass, that is the
time to stop buying Leica lenses.

Re: Is L glass that good?

But these consumer grade zooms are getting better all the time, and we (or
someone) has to keep throwing money into this pot in order to keep the
designers working away so they will keep improving....I am very impressed
with my Nikkor 24-120/3.5-5.6 IF AFD Zoom Lens. For under $300, it puts out
amazing performance. There is no way they could have produced anything like
this even 5 years ago. It proves there is still a lot of good things coming
down the pipe.....

Re: Is L glass that good?

He referred to using the best zooms as opposed to junk lenses.
Canon Ls certainly qualify into the "best zooms" group.

Re: Is L glass that good?

Polson, you know that any Canon "L" zoom lens will outperfrom any Leica
prime lens.
Got any of your pics to prove me wrong?

Re: Is L glass that good?

The OP may have been referring only to L lenses, but I was not
replying to the OP.

Re: Is L glass that good?

By "that good"...how good do you mean?
I would put it this way:
The best L zooms make the consideration of choosing them over a fixed focal
length lens a reasonable one.
Are they "the best"? That depends. The best...for what?
-That is contingent upon factors that are specific to each application and
need.
There's no magic answer.
They are very very good...even against fixed...and as zooms...you'll have a
hard time doing better than Canon L.

Re: Is L glass that good?

Note, though, that the OP specifically referred to "L"...not the crappier
zooms bought by the zillions...

No, not a chance. If nothing else, the best primes are generally a
stop or more faster than the best L lenses. That said, the very best L
zooms produce images that are as nice as good primes, albeit at at
least 3 times the price.
