Is L glass that good?

Another post made me think of this question...
Would an "L" zoom, or it's other brand equivalent, be good enough to
make prime lenses obsolete?
Just curious what other's opinions would be.

And from Leica shooters, not so much.

My point is that it is very easy to make bold proclamations without
providing any proof that what you are saying is true. And for Polson
of all people to make such declarations is the perfect example of the
old Texas saying, "All hat and no cattle."
So put up or shut up, Polson. Show us some Leica pics which are
superior to all others. Bowser, feel free to play as well. Don't be a
big chicken.

Re: Is L glass that good?

That statement is only true if you take Bret at face value...which is
usually a mistake.
;)
There's more to Bret than his schtick implies (exactly what, I wouldn't
venture to say...but if you fail to identify when Bret is playing, you'll
misinterpret things...)

Re: Is L glass that good?

Please allow me correct the typo in your sentence. It should have read:
'That was simple Bret's way of calling Tony out'

But, how do you *really* feel about this lens?
Of course it's "intriguing." It couldn't be *boring* and
still be a Leica, could it?
Of course it's expensive, it's a Leica, ain't it?

Re: Is L glass that good?

Yes, there was a 35-70mm zoom, but along with the 35mm f/2, it was a
very disappointing performer.
It actually worked very well, with the viewfinder masks gradually
opening out as you zoomed towards wide angle. A very clever solution.
If only the lenses could have been focused manually, rather than the
pseudo-manual focusing that didn't work well. There were very strong
rumours of a G3 with true manual focusing, but the Contax division of
Kyocera was in desperate financial trouble by then, and the disastrous
venture into full frame DSLRs with the N Digital finally killed them
off.
I know what you mean, but the 28-35-50mm f/4 ASPH Tri-Elmar is an
exceptionally good performer, well up to Leica's current stellar
standards. It's an excellent travel lens. Take a 90mm and you have a
very good all-round outfit.
Actually, there are now *two* Tri-Elmars because Leica have designed
an intriguing 16-18-21mm f/4 ASPH Tri-Elmar. Obviously, they had the
M8 in mind, on which it offers 21-24-28mm equivalent focal lengths,
but it will cover the full 35mm frame so can be used on the M1-M7
bodies too.
The accessory viewfinder is amazing, with 16-18-21-24-28mm focal
lengths *and* parallax compensation. But both the lens and the
viewfinder are very expensive.

Re: Is L glass that good?

Yes. I am speaking of the non-VR version. I don't own the VR version, and it
does cost considerably more money. I just like my version, which sells for
around $290 right now. I can compensate for the pincushion and barrel
distortion in Photoshop, and it is plenty sharp enough for me throughout its
range. It is a better lens than the 70-300 mm Nikkor zoom, which I also
have. To be sure, my prime lenses are much better glass, but the convenience
of this 5x zoom goes a long way toward keeping it on my camera when I am
just, "tooling around" looking for something to shoot......

Re: Is L glass that good?

At an under $300 price tag, I assume you are referring to the older
model 24-120mm, which was introduced in 1996 and discontinued at
the end of 2002. There's a newer model which has slightly different
alphabet soup: AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor ED 24-120mm f/3.5~5.6G. It
typically sells for a couple of hundred more.
I've owned both. Each is an acceptable compromise of optical
performance, flexibility, build quality, size and cost. But
neither one is consistently sharp across the range, and both
have a fair amount of distortion at the short end. I still use
the VR model when travelling, but I'm in no hurry to ditch my
primes.
