Is L glass that good?

Another post made me think of this question...
Would an "L" zoom, or it's other brand equivalent, be good enough to
make prime lenses obsolete?
Just curious what other's opinions would be.

Which newsgroup do you feel one DOES hear about this all the time?

Re: Is L glass that good?

Absolutely. The 5D is superb. It just needs better wide angle lenses
than Canon seem able to provide.

So why are you here? To save the poor, unwashed masses?

Re: Is L glass that good?

The market for used Carl Zeiss (Contax) and Leica wide angle lenses
was small and prices were reasonable. Then Canon users "discovered"
that these lenses were vastly superior performers to any of the Canon
wide angle lenses.
The result is that the used market has been set on fire, with prices
rising rapidly. Sales of Contax- and Leica R-to-Canon EF adapters
have soared; rather than being one-off specials these are now in
series production in China.
Online forums where pro users discuss equipment (and that obviously
excludes this newsgroup) are packed with details of how to get
non-Canon lenses to work well on Canon EOS cameras, both film and
digital. There are even workarounds for the Canon EOS 5D, whose
mirror is longer than needed for Canon glass but *just* long enough to
clash with some popular off-brand lenses. What a coincidence! It is
almost as though Canon did it deliberately! (Surely not?!?!?!)
Even Pentax SMC Takumar M42 mount lenses are popular on EOS cameras
and the adapters are widely available. That is because several of
them are optically better performers than the latest Canon glass. I
know that at least one adapter to use the optically even better Pentax
K and KA lenses on EOS bodies is also being developed.
So there is huge interest in using non-Canon glass on EOS bodies. You
probably don't hear much about the subject on this newsgroup because
this newsgroup has long been left behind by other online forums.

Re: Is L glass that good?

I guess he's saying that the Canon users that are serious about getting
quality images are the ones buying these lenses. This follows the same
logic of people using Nikon lenses on their FF Canons. I know one thing; if
Nikon doesn't get off their ass by spring and introduce an FF body I'll just
get me a 5D and an adapter so I can enjoy my lenses on an FF body. I've
seen pictures from a 5D with Nikon lenses and I must say they are beyond
spectacular. I'll give it to Canon for building such a sweet FF body as the
5D.

Re: Is L glass that good?

Define "so popular".

Re: Is L glass that good?

That's why Carl Zeiss (Contax) and Leica R wide angle lenses, both
fixed focal length and zoom, are so popular for use on Canon DSLRs.

Re: Is L glass that good?

You're not kidding! I have the 17-35 and I agree with you. Don't forget
the legendary 28-70mm f/2.8 for its remarkable optical perfection. I bought
both of these instead of the 17-55mm because of the superior optical and
build quality they have. As for "L" zooms, I know Canon's wide-angle zoom
is remarkably terrible for vignetting and other optical abnormalities.
Canon users got screwed on this one.

Re: Is L glass that good?

Some are.....The Nikkor 17-35 mm f/2.8 zoom is a rare example. - But they
are getting better all the time, and I look forward to more of them in the
future......
