In the typical process, the sensitized material is developed to a negative after exposure. In order to develop it as a positive, you would partially develop it, reexpose it to a strong light, and then finish developing. (That is not exactly how it is done, just my recollection.) A camera is a camera, even if it is a pinhole camera. If you are getting a positive image, you may be grossly overexposing. Try much shorter exposures and see what develops.
