Deleting pic from CF with camera problem

Not cross posting. I asked this same question on another NG and received no
reply. I'm hoping someone on this NG can help.
I am using a Sandisk Ultra II 2GB CF in my Canon 30D. Twice now when I have
been deleting individual shots with the camera "Image Protected" appears on
the LCD and the camera freezes - it just seizes up. (BTW both times I have
already deleted several shots before the problem occurs) I have never
chosen to Protct an image. If I shut the main power switch to OFF the red
light stays on, and the camera remains non-functional. I have to remove the
battery from the camera and reinsert it to use it again. I have reformatted
the card several times between the two time that it happened, yet it did
happen a second time. Do I have cause for concern? Any remedy?? I will be
taking the camera to Kenya in November to photograph my new born grandson &
hopefully wildlife as well. I would hate to lose any shots that might be
significant memories. How do I tell if the glitch occured because of the CF
or the camera? Thanks in advance for helpful advice.

You may know this from some other posts he referred to, but that
certainly wasn't made clear.

Re: Deleting pic from CF with camera problem

I would put the card in a card reader and defrag it, no reformatting!
The card must have come with a software utility with many options,
you would have installed this program. Did you go through all of
it's features? My card is a 1 gig 40x cheapo made by Lexar, I bought
it new and right on the card is a little app called image rescue 2 with
functional features as follows:
Image recovery (which can be done on a blank card) (really does work btw)
Card test
Card format
secure erase
card info
card update
This app also worked with my way old sandisk card perfectly fine.

If he did that he would loose the images he wants from the card.

Re: Deleting pic from CF with camera problem

Yes, but they won't replace any images that you have lost because of the
failure.....Another black mark in the "film versus Digital book" on the
digital side of the page...... Of course, film fails too, so I guess we are
even on that score.......But the least I would do, were I going to Kenya.
would be to carry a film camera as a back-up.......

Re: Deleting pic from CF with camera problem

Did you reformat the card in the camera? That's by far and away the
safest route. If you've tried this a second time and you still get those
results, I'd return the card for a new one. Also, for your trip, take a
bunch of cards....

Re: Deleting pic from CF with camera problem

Most likley you have a bad spot (or several) on the CF card. The number of
times you can write a particular bit is limited, the cards include some
logic to move things around to extend their life. The first to go are
the directory blocks where things get updated several times when you store
or delete a picture.
The average life of a card is between 10,000 and 100,000 writes before it
fails, with some that fail sooner and some that fail later.
Send the card back to SanDisk, they should replace it under warranty.
