Q about vivitar focusing macro 2x teleconverter

Does anyone know the range of extension of the (now old) Vivitar macro
focusing 2x teleconverter?
That's the teleconverter with the built-in variable extension tube--the
focusing ring has the notation 50mm at one extreme, but all the other
numbers are magnification ratios. The range of travel from one extreme to
the other is about .75 inch.
Also, does anyone know which focal length macro lens it was originally
designed for use with?
thanks
Mike

Re: Q about vivitar focusing macro 2x teleconverter

The instruction sheet does not specify range of extension. It goes
through the formulas for 50mm, for which the converter is marked. I
suppose it was aimed for the 50mm lens because that's where you'll get
1:1 macro and also the 50mm was the "standard" lens that came with most
35mm cameras.
The instructions do state it is desgined to work with a variety of high
quality lenses. It mentions 28mm-400mm plus zoom lenses. The chart
with the instructions show magnification and distances for a Canon 50mm,
a Vivitar 55mm, a Vivitar 28-90, Vivitar 135mm and a Vivitar 70-210.
When used on a zoom at any extension beyond the minimum (marked as
infinity symbol), you will lose the zoom's capability of staying in
focus though the zoom's range. That occurs with any extension tube.
This was not a big deal with the Viviar 28-90 lens since that's a
varifocal design and you were re-focusing when ever you changed focal
length.
It is a 7 element device.
