[SI] What to do now?

The shootin turned 3 years old on August 30th. There are no more
mandates in this round.
Is anyone still interested in the shootin?
Uncle Al has expressed a disinterest in continuing to be the SI
Director.
Looking at
http://www.pbase.com/shootin/pinhole
reminds me of how many people are no longer participants in the SI, in
this newsgroup or even on this planet.
Any thoughts?
Jim

I don't think so...

Re: What to do now?

Well, it looks like very few changes are going to be made to the
current format so I guess we'll just have to wait a month or two for it
to die completely before we revive it and give it new life. And this
time, you'll be in charge!

Re: What to do now?

Given the state of the SI, I semi-reluctantly agree.

I don't think he was in shape to be signing anything :-)

Re: [SI] What to do now?

I'd lean more to r.p.d.slr-systems myself for the same reasons.

Re: [SI] What to do now?

Well that's the nice thing about usenet: ignoring idiots who don't get
it. There are some good folks at rpd.slr-systems ... who actually
_care_ about photography.
The idea is to get more people in. It's sometimes amusing to see the
blow hards duck, evade and criticize the SI (a name or two here comes to
mind) without daring to participate.
If some jerks come along (and they will), you just ignore them.
Via news.google (painful, I know) and in the meantime beat up on your ISP.
Cheers,
Alan

Re: [SI] What to do now?

I would avoind x-posts as that has its own problems of various kinds, so
an exclusive move would be my advice.

Re: What to do now?

If the mandates are part of the problem, why not eliminate them?
We might get more participation if the exercise was about "What have
you been shooting lately?" Sort of a "RPE355 Photo of the Week" without
the competitive aspect normally associated with POTW contests.
There could still be suggested subjects, of course, but it wouldn't be
mandatory to follow them. Relaxing the restrictions on archived images
might also help.
So, for example, say the Suggested Topic (the word "Mandate" sounds too
stern for some folk) was "Reflections," I might dig into the archives
and submit this one:
http://www.pbase.com/bret/image/28942570
This would allow everyone to show their work, both current and old
stuff.
Perhaps allow one submission from each contributor that fits the
Suggested Topic, and one that could be anything the person chooses to
submit that week ("Potpourri"). Heck, maybe I wouldn't have to make so
many of my "XXXXX LOVES THE 20D!" posts.
Also, the deadlines could be relaxed since there would be no need to
submit by a certain date for a certain mandate. That way the current
SI administrator could post the pics as they came in at his leisure.
Also, the film shooters wouldn't be pressured into rushing their shots,
and we all know how slow those guys move.
Anyway, you asked for my 2 cents and I gave ya a whole nickel. Keep
the change.

Re: What to do now?

With all due respect, it appears that you are the one hung up on what
equipment should be used. What does it matter? The image you submit
will be in digital form anyway.

Re: What to do now?

I got in a bit of trouble over that one. Travis wouldn't sign the
model release.
