Wide angle IS makes sense...

The question of IS/VR usefulness still seems to come up a lot. -Especially
questions about why anyone would care to have IS at wide angle. Here's an
example of a room that was VERY dimly lit (despite the brighter look due to
purposeful exposure). This is hand-held at 24mm (REAL 24mm, shot on the
full frame 5D) at f5.6 and 1/10th second, using the 24-105 f4 IS:

For interiors where you don't want a nasty blast of flash, or in places
where tripods & flash are forbidden, you really do benefit. This would be a
completely usable shot. This isn't an extreme example, but it is well
beyond the typical hand-held "guidelines..."
I really should try it even slower just for kicks, but this was the shot I
took because it was the aperture I wanted.
BTW--This is the spot I'm sitting in as I type this...

For the severely math-challenged, that means I produced 256 discs with
custom labels, inserts, case labels, etc. It was a mess.
:)
-All better now, tho...

He thinks there....And he must have very clean thoughts.......

Re: Wide angle IS makes sense...

It isn't usually this clean...
Actually it was a HUGE mess only a few days ago after I put together 32
8-disk sets (4 CDs and 4DVDs) of videos, images, and ProShow Producer
presentations using my shots from Ukraine, along with the images taken by
other people working with me there. Had I taken a picture THEN...you'd have
seen huge piles of disks everywhere, DVD case labels all over the
place...and huge, tall stacks of 4-Disc DVD cases, along with a zillion DVD
post-office mailer boxes. :)
As for my "shots" from Ukraine...that what most of them were. -Merely
"shots", which is only one tick above snapshots. :( I had very little time
for anything more than that. I took a lot of people pictures, which I'm
happy about, but not for any particularly photographic master-work.
One thing I do notice my "office cleanliness", though, is that if my office
STARTS clean at the beginning of a huge project like that, I tend to be a
lot more productive. Plus... When it's clean, I find that I love being in
there...as opposed to being in there anyway, but always muttering to myself
"you slob!"

Re: Wide angle IS makes sense...

Very nice office, btw. Much nicer than mine. I'm curious, though...
it's way too clean... do you actually do anything in there?
:-p

Re: Wide angle IS makes sense...

I love my tripod.
I ONLY (I repeat...O-N-L-Y) took this hand-held to offer a look at one wide
angle application using IS, which many situations OTHER than my own office
often call for.
Believe me... If I simply wanted the best shot of my office, it would be at
ISO 100 or 50, on my fancy tripod, and exposed for a good long time.

What do you have against tripods? - I use mine for anything taken in my own
house, but I would love to have a VR lens for hand held stuff I take around
town........

Re: Wide angle IS makes sense...

A non-IS shot blown up to say 11x14 would probably show some shake
despite the short focal length.

I agree! I didn't type that. That was erroneously placed there by
base. -Not sure
why... Irritating...

Re: Wide angle IS makes sense...

Actually that's a CD/DVD publisher (automated burner/disk label printer).
