Nikkor 300mm f/4

I was recently given one of these as a gift (long story) and it looks
like a pretty nice lens. This isn't the new AF-S version, but the old
one with the drop in filters.
My question is about these filters:
Does it matter which way around you put them in? I haven't had an
opportunity to use the lens yet, but fully intend to this weekend. I
don't want to take a bunch of pictures only to find out that there is
slight degradation by having the filter in the wrong way (the D70 I will
be using it on doesn't have a zoom of the LCD preview big enough to
check this properly).
Also, is that little 39mm filter supposed to screw out? Mine seems very
firmly attached to the drop in holder.

Last time I use it , I don't have any problem which way the filter goes. But
for PL filters, make sure its in the correct orientation :)
re. the filter holder, you can have 2 types.
one is the threaded 39mm filter, the other one is gelatin filter.

Be careful when buying filters, as the threads are on the _outside_ of
the filter instead of the inside. There are some outrageously
expensive polarizers available new, but otherwise you'll be looking
for filters in clearance bins or the used market.

Mine is very sharp.

Yes, it is a threaded filter. Mine was quite tight. There isn't much room
inside the slot; you will need rather thin filters.
The principle objection to the slot is that polarizers are quite expensive.
And they are getting scarce since Nikon now uses 52mm filters for the big
guns.
