Fast, shortrange tele zoom, does it exist?

Hi Group
I love my 85mm f1.4, 105 f2.0 and 135 f2.0 and use them practically all the
time, mostly wide open for photographing people in all situations.
- But in the long run I find it a little annoying shifting lenses all the
time, so I was looking for a zoom that could make it up for most of these
lenses.
I've tried a zoom in the 80-200 f2.8 area, but I find it too bulky (I really
don't need 200mm)... and too slow as well.
Does anyone know of a 80-130 mm f2.0 or similar lens in any brand?
- I guess I would shift to any brand for the right lens by now ;-)
Regards, Rune

[snip]
As pointed out I already got a 85 f1.4, and cropped 85mm picture isn't quite
the same as a 135mm in terms of FOV. I have realized that when I started out
using a DSLR, thinking the 85mm all of a sudden would be my new 1xx mm
lens...
I like the speed of the 85mm, but love the look (DOF/FOV) of the 105-135
even more, no matter how it is cropped.

I guess you're right about that,
- it would be an heavy chunk of glass, but when I think about it, wouldn't
it be about the same weight as a 70-200 f2.8? - and that would be acceptable
for that kind of performance and speed.
I guess the biggest issue with production of a f2.0 zoom (any range) would
be the price.

Like the one he's already got you mean?

Re: Fast, shortrange tele zoom, does it exist?

Well it would help to know what kind of mount you're looking for, first
of all... Canon, Nikon, etc. 80-130mm isn't that much zoom factor;
you'd probably be just as well off, depending on your camera, using an
80mm (or so) prime and just "zooming" in software - Canon's got both
f/1.2 and f/1.8 85mm USM primes. You'd probably find the improved
overall optics of a prime vs. a zoom makes software zooming perfectly
acceptable, and of course, a prime is a lot lighter than a zoom of
similar length, especially one that fast.

Well, it's not up to your speed requirements, but it's very versatile, and a
lot better quality than you might at first expect....I speak of the 24 - 120
mm Nikkor zoom. See it here:
http://www.camerahobby.com/Review-24-120mm.htm
They also make a VR version, which costs about twice as much....I have the
non-VR version, which costs about $300.......

Think about it? If you have a AF 85mm f1.4 lens, and know how much it
weighs,
a zoom with a f2.0 range would weigh even more....
You, of course, could design your 'dream' lens and see if it is
possible.
Good luck!

Nikon series E 75-150 f3.5
Not what the OP needs though.

Re: Fast, shortrange tele zoom, does it exist?

Thought someone had a 50-150 zoom but can't seem to find it on
Photozone. Nikon does have a 55-200 zoom with modest wide aperture, a
70-210 f4, readily available used, or a 70-210 f4.5-5.6. Canon has a
70-210 f4L that's better than the Nikons. With the lenses you have I'd
just use my feet more, only the big 2.8 zooms are going to compete with
your existing set.

Re: Fast, shortrange tele zoom, does it exist?

I think you may have a difficult time finding what you want. That
80-130 is a 1:1.6 zoom ration and I doubt if anyone is making that short a
range especially when you add that f2.0 requirement.
Have you considered something with an IS (Image stabilized) with a
little longer zoom. It will be a little larger but it sure will be a lot
easier to find.
