Publishing a book of photographs

I'm sure this may have been covered in the past, but I can't recall
anything recent, so if you can indulge me, I would be very interested in
hearing input from people who know a bit about this subject.
If you have a fairly good collection of images that you would like to
make a coffee table book out of, what is the route normally taken to get
your work into print?
I don't think the traditional publishing houses are all that keen to
sink money into what is usually a bit of a self-indulgent outlet for
photographers, so I am thinking that perhaps self-publishing is the
likely answer, perhaps with some corporate sponsors to assist in the
costs of printing, especially if the subject matter is something they
would be interested in.
Am I wrong?

Re: Publishing a book of photographs

I think Michael Reichmann has a tendency to sometimes miss things. :-)
Lulu.com is not the only one, but probably the best set-up currently.
They are supposedly upgrading their equipment at the end of this summer.

Yes, I actually have given this a lot of thought and I have approached
some other photographers who also worked on the event to see if they
would be interested, but not from a sharing point, just as contributors
(for which they will be paid, naturally).

Wow! Thanks Gordon, this looks brilliant. I read the Michael Reichman
method of self publishing and stopped at the $10,000 for 100 copies
part!

Have you also thought of putting other photographers work in your book? You
could share the costs and the book would not be so "one photographer". By
that I mean we all have our likes and dislikes, our own style and tastes.
If you are selling a book of say 100 photos, and you are really into
close-ups, having 99% of them close up is to some, boring. It is something
to think about. Ric in Wisconsin.

Re: Publishing a book of photographs

100% right on with Lulu.
They published a Wedding album (True!) for one of my clients which she
distributed to modeling agencies, relatives and even gave me one for my
interview lounge.
She must have gained something from it because her sister has just
signed with me for a 120 pic pictorial shoot with the intention of self
publishing a book of her pictures too.
Lulu's work is quite good. I highly recommend anyone interested in self
publishing to check them out. Not just for photos either.

What is your intended run? A few dozen copies for family and friends,
or a few hundred for sale at arts & crafts festivals? A few thousand
for regional sale? Do you have a market? Who'll be your distributor?
Where will you sell these books?
Expect to foot the bill for setup and printing yourself. It may be
possible to get funding through grants or sponsorship, but I wouldn't
say it's common.

I've been looking into kodak easyshare gallery www.kodakgallery.com .
They offer hard bound books of varying length that you insert digital
images and text into. I haven't done one yet so I can't say whether I
like the service or not.
