Battery for Canon AE1P?

I have an old Canon AE1P that I want to dust off but I know that the old
style batteries are no longer made (mercury?). I've read that there are
new alternatives ... does anyone have any suggestions? I remember
reading somewhere that a non-mercury replacement battery had a different
voltage and that threw off the meter, requiring manual adjustment ... is
that accurate?

The AE1-P does not use mercury batteries. It uses readily available
batteries such as...
Eveready UCAR A544 Alkaline-Manganese 6v
Eveready UCAR 544, Duracell PX28 Silver-Oxide 6v
or if you want to splurge
Duracell PX28L Lithium 6v
