Photoshop ME (both cs1 and cs2) cause instant reboot on vector actions

Hello everyone.
I have both Photoshop CS1 and CS2 ME installed, both cause an extremely
serious problem:
In both versions, the following actions cause an instant reboot:
1. When I perform several vector actions related to New Fill Layer ->
Solid Color or drawing a path and then doing New Fill Layer->Solid
Color a few times.
2. Also, when opening a .psd or photoshop pdf file that includes many
Solid fill color layers with Vector masks and attempting to hide/show
layers (and sometimes even just opening those).
When searching Google Groups I noticed a message that suggests that one
should disable Adobe Gamma Loader to prevent this, It seemed to work at
first with CS2ME, but then case #1 occured again.
This practically renders photoshop completely unusable for me.
I have a Athalon XP, with XP Professional SP1, Geforce 2 Mx 100/200.
Hope someone can help. :)

Hunt,
Instant reboots can also be caused by having a PSU of insufficient wattage
to cope with the demands of your graphics card . A while ago I suffered from
instant reboots whenever I attempted to render 3D models with complex
shadowing in 3DStudio Max. All problems were resolved by the installation of
a 500W PSU. If the problem recurs, then take a look in this direction.

In article <1151354479.507278.97600@y41g2000cwy.googlegroups.com>, m7
mambo@gmail.com says...
A few questions: what is PS "ME?" Not familiar with that designation. What
amount of RAM do you have? How is it allocated to PS and to the OS? What is
Scratch Disk setup/size/free?
As Don states, re-boots are usually a hardware problem and memory is a good
place to start. I had a dual-processor MOB go south and got re-boots (not
usually task oriented) under W2K. RAM was OK, but MOB was basically "shorting
out." After hardware, then RAM allocation is a likely suspect. Are any other
programs running in the background? What is their RAM allocation? Conflicts?
When PS crashes, or the OS re-boots, Event Viewer should show a log of why.
Open it up and take a look under Applications and System. You SHOULD have
something in the log for that type of event. If not, look at what was
happening just before the event. Any clues?
Good luck,
Hunt
PS almost every problem with an OS or a program will only come when you have a
big project, and the closer the deadline, the more catastrophic the crash!
Always happens that way.

Re: Photoshop ME (both cs1 and cs2) cause instant reboot on vector actions

Well,
I renamed the files, and tried using the mentioned tools and files for
a few minutes and so far so good.
I have to continue working on a rather large project right now so I
should probably be able to determine whether this works around the
issues completely.
Thanks alot!

Re: Photoshop ME (both cs1 and cs2) cause instant reboot on vector actions

"Techs at Adobe were able to determine that the problem occured because of the
chip with Hyper threading technology. There were 2 files that work with the MNX
processor that apparantly didn't work with this type of processor.
The files are called Fastcore.8bx and MMXcore.8bx located in
Photoshoppluginsextensions directory. Just change the file ext. to .old or
anything instead of 8bx so the files are not loaded next time PS loads."
Hardware ?????
Whenever I hear "instant reboot" I immediately think memory chips.
I'm far from a PS expert, but that's been my experience with PCs over a couple
of decades.
Most serious errors cause a program disruption and lock a PC or otherwise leave
the PS running. Really dangerous memory writes can cause a reboot rather than
let the system suffer file damage due to the errant memory write.
If you want to check the memory possibility, try removing 1/2 of the memory and
see if it still happens. If it does, swap in the other half and try it again. It
will run slow, but may provide a clue. Try various combinations of the chips.
