Nikon Backword Compatable?

What is the probability Nikon will make future camera bodies capable of
handling a lens made by them many years ago? Of course I mean upcoming
digital bodies using older glass. I am referring to AI or forward. Of
course they can attempt to force buying new product such as "G" & "DX"
lenses, but will they support the older purchaser? Will the new full
frame sensor coming out in October be backward compatible? I,m not
going to be radical, but a reliable source says, yes, full frame sensor
in winter of 2006! Will it accommodate the traditional older lens?

There are some exceptions. Most of the early fisheye lenses and the

came with an auxiliary finder which mounted on top of the rewind knob,
just like the AS-1 flash coupler.
Some of the fisheye lenses apparently are so large that they won't
mount on any camera with a meter head, so you won't be using them with
your D2X or D200. :)

Re: Nikon Backword Compatable?

Don't knock Kodak - of which you do not know! I have and have had; MANY
high level Nikons and high level Canons; and I just bought a silly little
Kodak Z740, 5mg digital for party / drunk duty to pass around among friends
who are not familiar with same. I am sure as hell not passing around a multi
thousand dollar Nikon or Canon to my same friends.
The pictures this sub $300 thingy makes ARE AMAZING, I am TOTALLY happy
with it and their software, a previous version of which I have asked Nikon
to remove from my computer once before. Nikon even has a small program to do
so. The previous versions of Kodak software, Nikon called very poorly
written, etc; AND I did agree; are VERY aggressive. But now Kodak has GOTTEN
IT RIGHT! Darn fine little cameras.
Still love high end Nikons and Canons, but for quickie / party duty, the
little Kodak's are my favorite!

Re: Nikon Backword Compatable?

No argument Toby. But my need is to shoot and get results with a 14mm
wide. Not a 14mm X 1.5 = 21mm cropped image. There are many like me out
there with that need.

Re: Nikon Backword Compatable?

Nikon has always had a philosophy of maximizing backward compatibility, from
the first days of the F mount. I think one need only look at the D200, a
mid-range camera which is more compatible with older lenses than some of
their later film cameras, to see that they fully intend to support as much
of their legacy line of lenses as possible.

Re: Nikon Backward Compatable?

Sure. 14mm. 15mm, 16mm, 18mm, 17-35mm f2.8. True wide angle. Plus I
want blow ups of 20x30 inches that are tack sharp when viewed from 18
inches.

Slight correction here. The 18mm f/2.8 was recently discontinued:

Re: Nikon Backward Compatable?

Yes. It would add more useful wide angle ability to the digital products.
Further, glass has a limit to what resolution it can produce, so as sensor
become more pixel dense, glass will have to keep up, so clearly the limit of
glass technology will be reached on smaller sensors over larger sensors.

Re: Nikon Backward Compatable?

I can't think of any other reason for coming out with a full frame sensor
other than to enable the camera to use the older 35 mm film glass, can you?
So sure, it would be, "backward compatible"......

Re: Nikon Backward Compatable?

For one, it would be nice if you would actually cite the source [I have my
doubts to be honest]. And second, I have doubts that they would change the
lens mount. Why would they change it? Doing so means they would have to have
an entire line of lenses available before they can drive any significant
sales, and that would mean they are likely to lose some ground to Canon.

@comcast.net says...
I've heard these rumours as well. Apparently they are overcoming the
problem of vignetting by developing a curved sensor to accept light more
directly in the corners.
Now here's my dilemma...do I wait for this full frame Nikon DSLR or do I
get one of the hundreds of D200's that will become available on the used
market when this announcement is made?
