Odd slides vs negatives question

If you look at this blog posting:
http://swapatorium.blogspot.com/2006/06/faces.html
You can see the following:
"I got this lot of slides about three years ago [...]all of young
women. Some, like the ones here have letters written on their
foreheads"
Its a bit of a mystery. What I am hoping is that some of the more
knowledgeable posters here might know why slides would be used over
negatives, if these were 'before and after' rhinoplasty pictures. Some
have suggested that they are individual index shots for a larger group
photo, is that "standard practice"? Is there anything that the
pictures and the materials that they are made from can tell us about
why anyone would take these odd photos?

Also, based on the hairstyles, the pictures are old enough to be from
a time when slides were the normal way to get colour photographs.
It would be interesting to know the date when Kodacolor began to sell
better than Kodachrome. My guess would be mid-1960s in the US
and late 1960s elsewhere.

Re: Odd slides vs negatives question

I think these are images from some kind of medical study, not
pre-surgical photos. Rhinoplasy would include side views. And the images
are all "before", with no indication of "after", especially if the last
two images are the same person taken seven years apart. There's been no
surgical intervention there.
Based on the hairstyles, most of the images were taken mid to late 50s.
The third image has 1961, which may be a date, but the other numbers
don't appear to be dates - "261" & "661".
I think they're slides so they can be projected, to train medical
students to recognize "clinical indicators" for Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.

...
Slides can be projected before an audience, which doctors frequently do
while lecturing.....
