Going into Transform

Using CS2........
I am making a montage by opening photos and placing them on a new
image.
As soon as I drag the photo onto the new file, it goes into "Transform"
mode -
handles appear, mouse curser turns into rotating arrows, and menu
options are grayed out.
When I first tried doing the montage over the weekend, I was opening
the photos, resizing them down then moving them to the new image. The
other day I tried using Transform for the first time, but decided
against it. Now it's going into transform by itself.
What gives?

With the Move tool selected - there is a check box above for "Show
Transform Controls"
that was checked.
Problem solved. .

See my reply to the OP. Maybe you want to check Show Bounding Box.

With the Move tool selected, uncheck Show Bounding Box on the Options
Bar. It's not really going into Transform, though you can do Transform
things with the bounding box handles.

start when I was doing multi-Layered assemblies, instead of having to hit
Ctrl-T, when each image was placed, but I've never heard of it starting as a
default with this operation.
When something quirky happens in PS, a good first-step is to trash your Prefs
and then re-set the Cursors, Scratch Disks, etc. Do this, before you do any
sort of re-install, etc.
