New camera ideas

My wife shoots with a Canon AE1 and a similarly aged
zoom. There is nothing really wrong with this set up
but the lens is a bit big and she frequently has trouble
with difficult lighting conditions such as back light.
She seldom remembers about the backlight compensation
button, for example.
Anyway, I thought it would be nice to buy her a more
recent camera and am considering the Canon Rebel series
(for film). Film suits her fine, she mails the films to
a discounter and gets back her 3x5 prints in a week or
so. Fussing with digital storage cards, transferring to
the computer and printing out doesn't interest her.
Taking the memory card into a local one hour would raise
the cost of the prints from about 10 cents to about 30.
So, any remarks on a rebel (T2?) or competitor with a third party
zoom of about 28-200?

Re: new camera ideas

You can go all manual with an A2. Should be the same for the Elan -
isn't it?
Didn't know what model - the older FM3? I used to use my dad's camera -
an old canon - AE1 maybe?
Nah, I don't need the eye thing - I focus where I want to anyway.

Re: new camera ideas

I never tried it, it looks like too automatic for me. After buying an Elan
II I decided I wanted to go all manual and bought a FM3.
I was surprised you didn't know this model, it came out a long time ago.
But in your case, having an A2 I don't think you'll miss a thing if you are
not attracted by eye focusing for example. I wanted to own an A2 but then it
was replaced by thie 3 model.

Re: new camera ideas

Not a bad price but I'm fine with my A2, although I do like the 45pt
focus system. But never thought the eye-controlled focus was a good
idea.

Re: new camera ideas

Well, I don't know his financial situation, but my lens purchases are
from time-to-time - not all at once - as I feel I need a new lens, then
I look for one with a canon mount. EOS 3 - Not familiar with that one -
is that the Euro version of the US pro model?

Re: new camera ideas

That's for sure Jimbo but if Robert was thinking about spending more than
200$ per lens for his wife may be he would think about an EOS 3 or better
don't you think?

Re: new camera ideas

That only applies to the cheap lenses - usually the one that comes as
part of the camera package - but allong as the galss captures a good
image - so what. I buy used lenses - anywhere from $200 & up - that
correlates to a cost of $400-600 if bought new.

Re: new camera ideas

The Rebel series may be a good choice for your wife since they are light and
easy to use and have much more features than your AE1.
The point is will she miss the feeling of manual lenses? Everything in new
cameras is made out of plastic. That's the first thing I felt when I bought
my elan, autofocus and all that was great but I missed the trusty feeling of
good old metal.

Re: new camera ideas

I researched the Rebel G when I bought my 1st Camera ~ 9-10 yrs ago. It
was a good price but it had one limiting factor - plastic lens mount
which meant you couldn't load anything bigger than a 300mm - and I
don't think you could do a 300 as well. I don't know if that applies to
the current rebel.
I then loooked at the Elan II, the model above the Rebel G, and that
had all the abilities of the REbel and then some - including a metal
lens mount for large lenses.
But the price for the A2, the amateur model just below the then pro
body (Canon 1 I think?), was only a couple of $100's more. So I think
the Elan II was ~ $500-600. I bought an A2 body for ~ $800. Love that
camera. It came with a so-so 35-105mm zoom, and I bought a 50mm lens as
well and some filters - total ~ $1000-1200 - can't quite remember.
Since then I've added to my lens inventory as well as picking up a 2nd
used A2 body about 2yrs ago for ~ $200.
Spend the extra cash so that you don't limit yourself in the future.

Re: new camera ideas

You should consider the Canon EOS Elan 7 with a genuine Canon zoom. The Elan
7 is an outstanding 35mm camera; in my opinion a quantum leap above the
slightly cheaper Rebel series.
I'd suggest you forget the "third party" or even second party lenses. Go
with a decent Canon zoom and the Elan 7; you won't be sorry. If the
salesperson tries to talk you into a Quantray or other aftermarket lens
telling you the quality is equal to or better than Canon, quickly leave the
store. He's a cheat and trying to rip you off to increase his profit margin.
