Mounting an old Nikkor-O C 35mm f/2 Auto

I saw an old Nikkor-O C 35mm f/2 Auto (pre-AI) at a pawn shop but it did
not seem to be able to mount on my D200. Does it need to be modified to
mount? I didn't force it. It dropped in & began turning then started to
jam by my reckoning.
It looks just like the one on the bottom of this page:

$100 I saw some for $130 last time I looked.
Nikon-O C 1:2 f=35mm 839215
LENS MADE IN JAPAN
-'O' means octa, 8 elements
-'C' means 'integrated Coating or multi-coating'
(without this designation they go for $50 on ebay)
-only stops down to f/16 (not 22, bummer)
-probably not AI modified so is overpriced?
-metal meter coupling prong
-no rear cap (basis for bargaining?)
-no lens hood
-front cap has 2 metal knobs to release
-chrome base/knurled aperture ring
-scalloped focusing ring
-distance scale (I think?)

Re: Mounting an old Nikkor-O C 35mm f/2 Auto

Way off topic here but let me just mention that my D200 goes through
batteries real fast! Part of that is VR lenses but I think one big
culprit is the 3-color histogram takes a second or so to generate, using
a lot of processing power... and a rather large LCD. And I do 'chimp'
most every shot. And the batteries are out of stock at both B&H & Adorama!

Re: Mounting an old Nikkor-O C 35mm f/2 Auto

Presumably. I understand you can't use the fifth battery with it, though,
so that makes it slightly less useful than I had anticipated. Frankly, I
still hadn't received mine and since I finished my fourth and final wedding
of the summer last weekend, I cancelled the order yesterday. I find I have
no trouble with batteries if I simply put in a fresh set of NiMH when I got
to the reception.

According to <blackeyesue@gmail.com>:
O.K. A true external battery pack -- presumably using the same
connector provided for an AC power supply.
Thanks,
DoN.

Re: Mounting an old Nikkor-O C 35mm f/2 Auto

According to Matt Clara <hey.wood.y@buzz.off>:
[ ... ]
You may make me dig back into the manual for my SB800. Mine
simply uses four (or optionally 5, with an external housing replacing
the battery compartment door) AA cells -- and for me NiMH by choice.
Is there an optional battery pack similar to the LiIon batteries
used the D70, D50, and D200 (presumably among others)?
I know that there is a connector for an external AC power
supply. Is that what you are talking about?
Enjoy,
DoN.

Ohh, that hurts, said the guy waiting on the battery pack for his sb800 for
yet the third month...

Re: Mounting an old Nikkor-O C 35mm f/2 Auto

Valid points. The 24mm and 28mm f/2.8 Nikkors are among the best
lenses in the Nikon range.
Unfortunately, there is some pretty hideous bright-ring bokeh among
those shots, but the overall rendition is (strangely) nowhere near as
unpleasant as the bokeh would suggest. Here is a lens that will
satisfy people who don't place a high priority on smooth bokeh, but
who value other optical characteristics.
These shots are representative of the lens. As with the f/1.4, there
is a lot of bright ring bokeh, but unlike the f/1.4 the lens isn't
anywhere good enough to redeem itself in other ways. The nicest thing
you can say about it is that it is reasonably sharp stopped down.
I have owned the 35mm f/2 in both AIS and AF-D versions and I think it
is fair to say that this was the lens that made me decide to change
brand, as 35mm is my most used focal length. The Pentax 35mm lenses
(35mm f/2, 35-105mm f/3.5) I have used for the past few years are
optically so much more competent than comparable Nikkors that you
would expect them to cost several times more.
There is a 35mm f/1.4 under development for manufacture by Cosina.
Progress has probably been delayed slightly by the quality control
problems with the Zeiss Ikon rangefinder camera body. Be patient,
because should be well worth the wait.

Re: Mounting an old Nikkor-O C 35mm f/2 Auto

When Nikon say "soon" it actually means "sooooooooooooooooooooooooon".
For example, I was told in February (2006) that my Nikon scanner would
be delivered "soon", so I persuaded the dealer to lend me one. I
still have the loan scanner and there is no sign of the one I ordered.

Re: Mounting an old Nikkor-O C 35mm f/2 Auto

OK but for $100 it sounds fantastic. I assume the Zeiss ones will be
over $800 or some such. I would want to be certain if I preffered 24 or
28mm first.
OK I just looked up samples, it is pretty bad and that's true that I
would want 1.4 to use 1.4 so the 35/2 makes more sense.

Ah, you meant "soon" in Nikonese! I see. :)
