Looking for Travel Lens for Pentax

I am looking for an all-purpose travel lens for my
Pentax ZX-5n. I now have a pentax 28-105 that has
served me well, but has minor damage through
flumustication with a wee child.
Found this lens online:
TAMRON AF28-300MM F/3.5-6.3 XR
Comments?? Opinions?? Damnations??
thanks

Re: Looking for Travel Lens for Pentax

There is a reasonable review of it here
<http://www.bobatkins.com/photography/reviews/tamron_28_300_review.html>
It is of course, and always will be a compromise lens, jack of all
trades, master of non.
It might be worth also looking at the Tamron 28-200 which is less of a
compromise, and better rated at fredmiranda.com thought I'm more tempted
by something like the 24-135 for a day to day walkabout lens, tis a bit
pricier though.

Re: Looking for Travel Lens for Pentax

I second Jeremy's input.
If there is a need for a light weight teleprime (it is heavy weight
in resolution) , I would have brought almost my FA135 2.8. The zoom
from wide to 200mm or even 300mm do degrade the product to an extent
that is not acceptable to me. May be just me.

Re: Looking for Travel Lens for Pentax

11:1 zoom. Distortion and softness. Okay for snapshots that you'll
print at up to 5x7 (and the softness will show even then).
For travel, a 28-205 is a great compromise.

Re: Looking for Travel Lens for Pentax

I would recommend the SMC PENTAX-A 35-105mm f/3.5 zoom. It is manual
focus, but focus confirmation works and it supports all the exposure
modes on your ZX-5n. It is superbly sharp, even wide open, and it has
very smooth out of focus rendition. Distortion is well controlled.
Build quality is excellent. A pro grade lens for very little money.

Re: Looking for Travel Lens for Pentax

Mechanicals are not quite as good as the glass. *My opinion*.
I've got the 28-200. It's good optically, but it's one of those zooms
that creeps when the camera's hanging from the strap. Have to refocus
some when you zoom.
Bought it second hand for about $150 USD and got my money's worth.

Re: Looking for Travel Lens for Pentax

Thanks Jeremy. I do have several old M42 primes from my Spotmatics
that I use on the ZX-5n. They, together, get a little cumbersome to
carry around the high places in the Yorkshire Dales. Rather than
carry all six of them, I'd prefer to carry just one, lightweight,
all-purpose lens for these vacation snaps, thus saving the
primes for more serious shooting.

Re: Looking for Travel Lens for Pentax

Thanks for the tip. I'll look for the Tamron 28-200mm XR.
More to the point, is this Tamron series a good all around lens??
Back in the day, Tamron made really el-cheapo zoom lenses for
the manual-SLR market, vastly inferior to Super-Takumar and all.
Are they much improved??

Re: Looking for Travel Lens for Pentax

...
Have you ever considered the advantages of a 50mm normal lens?
1: The f/1.7 is going to be one of THE sharpest lenses you've ever used.
2: Much more light-gathering ability means you can see much brighter image
in the viewfinder, and that makes manual focusing much easier and accurate.
3: Low price because these lenses were manufactured in high quantity (I
believe that the f/2.0 50mm normal lens is still available brand new for
under $70).
4: Low optical distortion (the f/1.7 is even better in this regard than the
more expensive f/1.4 or f/1.2 normal lenses).
5: Beautiful bokeh.
6: A genuine Pentax lens, not a third-party item.
7: Perspective that is very close to that of the human eye.
8: I have found the normal lens to be indispensable--especially when I want
to represent the scene with as little lens-induced graphical control as
possible. (I do a lot of architectural photos, landscapes and cityscapes,
and my goal is usually to render the scene to be as close as possible to the
way it looked to me when I was standing there).
9: I have found that I can "Zoom with my feet," when necessary in many
circumstances. I carry a couple of zoom lenses, but I would estimate that
at least 80% of my images are taken using the 50mm normal lens.
10: The lens is small and light--not bulky as are most zooms--allowing the
camera to lay flat against one's chest, when hung from a neck strap. I
particularly appreciate that. Zoom lenses tend to point the camera
downward, due to their forward weight, and it is a much different experience
to walk around with a camera hanging from one's neck all day long.
Normal lenses have gotten a bad reputation in recent years, but I have found
them to be empowering, in the sense that I can remain focused upon creating
the best possible viewpoint and composition, rather than on constantly
adjusting the focal length and putting up with a dim viewfinder and a bulky
carrying experience. I have found that I take more shots because I spend
less time thinking about the equipment.

Re: Looking for Travel Lens for Pentax

How steady are your hands? If you opt for the 28-300mm lens, the need
for a monopod or tripod may be the end result as some shooting from
200mm to 300mm requires a 'steady' camera for good results.
If you can, see if the Tamron 28-200mm XR lens is available in the
Pentax mount. Same basic idea, but not quite as long as the 300mm
model.
