Re: Looking for Travel Lens for Pentax ... Have you ever considered the advantages of a 50mm normal lens? 1: The f/1.7 is going to be one of THE sharpest lenses you've ever used. 2: Much more light-gathering ability means you can see much brighter image in the viewfinder, and that makes manual focusing much easier and accurate. 3: Low price because these lenses were manufactured in high quantity (I believe that the f/2.0 50mm normal lens is still available brand new for under $70). 4: Low optical distortion (the f/1.7 is even better in this regard than the more expensive f/1.4 or f/1.2 normal lenses). 5: Beautiful bokeh. 6: A genuine Pentax lens, not a third-party item. 7: Perspective that is very close to that of the human eye. 8: I have found the normal lens to be indispensable--especially when I want to represent the scene with as little lens-induced graphical control as possible. (I do a lot of architectural photos, landscapes and cityscapes, and my goal is usually to render the scene to be as close as possible to the way it looked to me when I was standing there). 9: I have found that I can "Zoom with my feet," when necessary in many circumstances. I carry a couple of zoom lenses, but I would estimate that at least 80% of my images are taken using the 50mm normal lens. 10: The lens is small and light--not bulky as are most zooms--allowing the camera to lay flat against one's chest, when hung from a neck strap. I particularly appreciate that. Zoom lenses tend to point the camera downward, due to their forward weight, and it is a much different experience to walk around with a camera hanging from one's neck all day long. Normal lenses have gotten a bad reputation in recent years, but I have found them to be empowering, in the sense that I can remain focused upon creating the best possible viewpoint and composition, rather than on constantly adjusting the focal length and putting up with a dim viewfinder and a bulky carrying experience. I have found that I take more shots because I spend less time thinking about the equipment. Jeremy
