Why does my transparent background have to be white?

I'm trying to make an animated gif with a picture of an arm and then a watch
fades in on the wrist. What I want to do is have one photo of the arm and the
other photos of the watch (with varying degrees of opacity) with a transparent
background. It works if I save the transparent background as white only. If
I go to Save for Web and select anything else, other than white, using Matte,
it won't work. My watch has white in it, so the background has to be another
color.

Image Ready is very easy to use for animations
"export optimized as" and choose gif
or export as flash
get the animation palette
make the frames by clicking the paper icon
while in each frame turn off and on the layers you want to show in that
frame
choose the time for each to show (click the 0 sec) you can do this to
multiple frames by CTRL or SHIFT
(for transitions use tween looks like little bubbles)

Of course you could easily 'solve' your problem by making the 'white' of the
clockface a 'lesser' white, say 232,232,232

That could be the problem...I'm not using Image Ready. I've been using
Photoshop for years (obviously not for transparencies) but I find Image Ready
so damn convoluted that I can't use it for animated gifs. I even tried
reading the instructions and just gave up. I'd seriously rather throw myself
in to traffic then try using it again.
Right now I'm using some program called Baborosa, which has a transparency
feature and as I mentioned it works, but only if the gif file is saved with a
white background.
I might just have to give up on the ol' animated gif idea.

The matte color is not the same as the transparency color. You make the
background transparent by building it on a transparent background in
Photoshop, and making sure "transparency" is ticked on in ImageReady's
Optimize palette.

Gee, both my gif programs have an option to select the 'transparency'. Try
RTFM or pressing F1 when in the gif program.
