Inkjet cartridges.. generics ??

On my older canon printer I used generics for a long time, they worked fine.
The printer finally ended up with clogged heads, weather it was due to the
cartridges or it would have happened anyway I don't know... oh... so I'm
looking for advice on places to purchase generics... buying canon brand is
not an option... I was also looking at possible refill kits ??
I have a Pixma ip4300... with the chip on the cartridge which I've been told
you can reset ??
and I don't print full color pictures that need to be color perfect... for
that I take my photos to the lab...
