Preparing jpegs for website

PS CS2
col space adobe RGB(1998)
the images look great in PS on a calibrated monitor. But when they are
uploaded and viewed in a browser (e.g. IE which isnt a col managed
program) they look darker and duller.
what steps can I take to compensate and have them appear on the web as
they look in PS
thanks

Franko

Re: preparing jpegs for website

Why bother what the Save for web dialog looks like? Check the result in
your browser. That is the only thing that counts. If you have converted
to sRGB first (or you already worked in sRGB), the image should look
(almost) the same in your browser as it looks in Photoshop itself. If
it's really different, your monitor profile may be off.

Re: preparing jpegs for website

I make no such assumption. Even while working in sRGB, Save For Web
always looks different than the document itself. I can move the window
so I can see both and the Save For Web one typically looks less
saturated. In Generic RGB, these effects seem to be minimized. I
remember reading a thread on the Adobe forums about this quirk with Save
For Web.

Re: preparing jpegs for website

If you use 'Convert to Profile', the image won't change at all.
Apparently you are using 'Assign Profile', which is the wrong method.

Re: preparing jpegs for website

Just convert to sRGB ???Will that do it on it's own or do I still have
to use levels or curves or whatever to try and compensate for it
getting duller and darker ?

Re: preparing jpegs for website

The mistake you make is that you assume that 'Save for the web' converts
your images to sRGB. That would be logical, but it is not so. 'Save for
the web' doesn't convert the color space, that is why your images look
dull if you work in AdobeRGB. If you work in AdobeRGB, you have to
convert to sRGB first.

Re: preparing jpegs for website

sRGB is a good space to work in for the web. Personally, I find that
"save for web" really desaturates images from the way they look within
Photoshop unless I work in "Generic RGB," which is quite
anti-color-workflow, but so is the web...

Re: preparing jpegs for website

Convert to sRGB color space before uploading to the web server.
