Is it possible to use unsharpmask on its own layer ?

If you only need to be able to make color changes in the original
layer(s), the following trick works as well and gives more options for
the sharpening itself:
1. Copy your image to a new layer
2. Set the Layer mode to 'Luminosity'
3. Use your favorite sharpening method (unsharp mask, smart shapen)
to sharpen this layer.

Here's a trick that comes close, in that the layer contributes sharpening
information, and allows you to make color changes to the original layer,
though cloning and other operations will require that you recreate the
sharpen layer.
1) duplicate the original layer
2) run Filter>Other>High Pass
3) specify the same radius parameter that you would have for USM
4) set the layer mode to Overlay
Here are some articles on the curvemeister forum that discuss three methods
of sharpening, two of which use an overlay layer. Each includes an action
that performs the operation automatically.

Yes, of course. Copy the image to a new layer and beform unsharp mask on
that layer.
