Erase & brush tool problems with layer masks

Up until today, if i had a layered imaged i could add a layer mask and
use the erase tool to delete portions of the layer mask to reveal the
layer underneath it. if i made a mistake i could then use the brush tool
to paint back in the layer i was working on.
for some reason this has just broken, the brush tool is deleting just
like the erase tool, can anyone help?
cheers keith

Let's say that you have set both the Brush and Eraser to the same size/
softness of Brush (Also setting Eraser to Brush in Options), they work the
same. However, edjh's suggestion of staying in Brush and just hitting X is
even quicker than the keyboard shortcuts to the two tools - just make sure
that your colors are set to Black/White, as they should be when you are
working in QM or with an Alpha Channel active.

Re: erase & brush tool problems with layer masks

thanks
I was just thinking ooer what if I erased all the masks in my old files....
I am self taught and came late to learning about masks
I was so happy to find you could paint with the brushes...

Re: erase & brush tool problems with layer masks

The eraser is the same as a white brush. A mask is always opaque; you
cannot have a transparent mask or something like that.

Re: erase & brush tool problems with layer masks

when I didn't know any better I used the eraser on the masks
Now I use the brushes
does the eraser actually remove part of the mask? or it does the same thing
as the brush?

And, as edjh points out, if you have the Brush selected as your Eraser Tool,
you can just hit X to go between the Eraser and Brush, rather than choose on,
or the other. While it will work for the Block and Pencil in Eraser Options, I
assume that you want a Brush effect for your painting and erasing.

Re: erase & brush tool problems with layer masks

Are you using black instead of white perhaps? That matters with both the
Brush and the Eraser. Really, there isn't any reason to switch tools at
all, just hit X to switch between black and white.
