Rollei 35 - alkaline batteries?

I have just inherited a Rollei 35 (early model, Made in Germany). I
decided to drop in a film and give it a go, and I am having fun taking
pictures :-) Wonderfully different little machine.
Now, I renewed the battery, and I have the feeling what I got was an
alkaline 625 cell (Varta), I very much doubt the original mercury cell
are commonly available here in Denmark. How will that influence the
meter reading? If the voltage is wrong, will it be possible to correct
the reading by changing to another ISO setting?
I am using an XP2 at the moment, so exposure should not be terribly
critical. But in Denmark in Ocrtober, you cannot count on using the
sunny 16 rule. The forecast for the next few days is nice, though:

Re: Rollei 35 - alkaline batteries?

Don't know if this will work for your Rollei 35, but don't see why not.
I've used it for other 625 mercury battery cameras (Canon FTb, Olympus RD,
Canon QL 17 etc) :-
Buy some 675 Zinc-Air hearing aid batteries that deliver1.4 volt, close
enough to the 1.35 of the original battery to make no difference. They have
a smaller diameter than 625s but you can make them fit snugly in the battery
chamber with a rubber tap washer or a little cross section of soft plastic
lab tubing round the outer edge. Yes - they have a short life as they dry
out quite quickly, but you can prolong this by removing them from the camera
when not in use and replacing the sticky tab over their air holes. In any
case they are dirt cheap for a packet of 8 and have a long enough shelf life
if you keep them sealed.
Allow 15 min or so to equilibrate when you first insert them.
With this setup I've got camera meter readings that agree with a hand held
meter.

In a big port on the Elbe, about halfway between Copenhagen and Amsterdam...
:-)
P.S. I spent 4 months at Roskilde Universitatscenter, living in Hvidovre
& Roskilde.

This works really well with a 'sports finder': I use the
collapsible one for the Mamiya Universal/Press/Super/23,
it fits the camera's accessory shoe. The finders show
up on ebay with some regularity and there is a similar
one for the Koni-Omega [and probably lots other].

For fast-moving/unpredictable I use scale focusing and count on depth
of field [Which means a small lens opening and a fast shutter speed
which aren't compatible, but c'est la vie.].
I 'focus' on an arc of ground and wait for the subject to be
in the in-focus zone and doing something interesting and then
press the shutter. Zero lag and never focuses on the wrong thing.
Of course, all the interesting things happen outside of the
pre-focused area: Murphy's law must be obeyed and if it isn't
one thing it's another.

I know, it is the first film in, so I am curious.
That's the point, and it got me started again. I have considered the
various rangefinder options, but then I have to start negotiatiate
budget at home :-/
We are already talking of what to replace the Canon G3. To me (and my
wife too now), the focus is unbearably slow. We are considering a DSLR
(digital is convenient for emailing the family), but at the other hand
I would love to get back to B/W - lots of cheap darkroom equipment at
ebay. Digital processing feels a bit too much like work.
Tak!
About where? California?
Thanks for your input

Re: Rollei 35 - alkaline batteries?

Hej Martin,
You may find find one of the Rollei's weaknesses there: A scale-focused
40mm lens isn't especially good at capturing unpredictable, fast-moving
objects.
A wider angle lens (35, 25 or 21) on a rangefinder might make capturing
UFMOs (Unpredictable Fast Moving Objects) easier - for example a
Cosina/Voigtländer lens on a C/V or Soviet body.
But I guess the Rollei was "free"...
Those two lenses were my constant companions for two decades (still have
them)!
Good luck & Hej Hej!
Chris,
also enjoying the beautiful weather a couple of hundred Km south &
slightly west of you.

I don't know how much I will actually use it yet. I just decided to
have a go for the fun of it, the biggest strength to me is the
discretion. My son (age 7) and his friends hardly notice it.
My normal gear is a Nikon FA + 105/2.5 with a 35/2.0 in a
pocket/rucksack(sp); the Rollei is a different way of working. The
Nikon is good, but not discreet.
I will keep the adapter in mind, I even know which shop to ask for it:

Re: Rollei 35 - alkaline batteries?

Your own MMV. I don't know if the 35 & 35S have the same meters. It also
involves checking the accuracy often (before every major use), or
putting in fresh batteries just to be safe.
If you use the Rollei a lot, my own recommendation would be a de-volting
silver cell adapter - they cost only a little more than a single Wein
Cell - and could help save you from "oops-unexpected-discharge" surprise...

That's the type.
Good to have this confirmed, I somehow expected it. But my knowledge of
electronics is a bit scetchy :-)
I wil have a go comparing to my FA.
Good tip. The offset should be independent of ISO(ASA) setting, that's
no problem.
Copenhagen is not like Liverpool (where I lived for some years), it is
on the edge between atlantic and continental climate. Weeks of showers
rather than weeks of drizzle. July was warm (25-30 a lot of the time)
and dry, August very wet (we had 230mm of rain, 3 times normal),
September quite dry and warm. Had coffed outdoors just over a week ago,
which is not normal here.
Hehe.
