Re: Need Do-It Yourself instructs to replace LCD on Minolta Maxxum 7000 <esteeyou@yahoo.com> wrote in On LCD replacement in general: it depends on the how and what of replacing. The LCD glass is held to a circuit board with a metal clip and connections between the LCD and the circuit board are made with 'zebra strip'. Popping the clip off and then trying to get a new LCD, zebra strip and circuit board to line-up again so the LCD works is nigh impossible without a factory fixture [or reasonable facsimile] for aligning all the parts as they are reassembled. With lots of patience and lots of luck it can be done, and sometimes even most of the LCD segments still work after all is done. The thing to do is replace the LCD and the circuit board at the same time. However ... Cameras, since space is tight, use flexible circuit boards made from plastic sheet - about the thickness used on report covers - with copper foil traces. One or more large flex circuits run all over the inside of the camera and have all the switches, displays, ICs and electronic components soldered to them. Replacing the whole of the flex circuit will be a massive PITA and will require surface-mount solder re-work equipment [figure in the $1,000's for the tools]. Replacing just the LCD with out the proper factory fixture will be a very hit or miss affair. Sorry to say, I can't be encouraging in this matter. However, if you like fiddling and don't mind the possibility of tossing the whole shebang in the trash, give it a go. Pop of the LCD clip and give it your best shot. As to how to get inside the camera ... I can't be much help. -- Nicholas O.
